PRIESTS AND KINGS

A person’s spirit is the vital principle or animating force traditionally believed to be the intangible, life-affirming force in the self and in all human beings. Now people, as part of their spiritual journey, are struggling with what this means for their work. Some are calling this trend “a spiritual awakening in the American workplace.” Patricia Aburdene in her recent book Megatrends 2010, states that the focus on spirituality in business is becoming so pervasive that it stands as “today’s greatest megatrend.” She contends that more and more people are making choices in the marketplace as “values-driven consumers” and the power of spirituality is increasingly impacting our personal lives and spreading into organizations to foster a moral transformation in them.

LOVE AND RELATIONSHIP

As humans, the relationships we form with other people are vital to our mental and emotional wellbeing, and really, our survival.Humans have an inherent desire to be close to other people. To connect and build relationships. While a man stranded on an island, talking to a volleyball (you remember the movie!) isn’t necessarily “healthy,” his compulsion for company is. That’s because the fact of the matter is, healthy relationships (romantic relationships, friendships, familial relationships -- they all count!) can help make for a healthier overall life. But what exactly does a healthy relationship look like?A positive relationship can be shared between any two people who love, support, encourage and help each other practically as well as emotionally. In no particular order, people in healthy relationships tend to:Listen to each other
Communicate openly and without judgment
Trust and respect each other
Consistently make time for each other
Remember details about each other’s lives
Engage in healthy activities together
And while you don’t have to be romantically involved to enjoy the benefits of a healthy relationship, there are various studies on the positive effects a healthy romantic relationship can have on your health.

Communication forms and sustains society and at the same time develops and maintains our individuality. It is the nervous system of the social and political body.As communication is central to any culture, so the tools of communication are essential to our highly technological culture. This policy statement addresses two areas of mediated communication in society in which our churches need to play a role:Media Education: Promoting understanding of how media work, how media affect our lives and how to use media wisely. This includes differentiating among the values, messages and meaning of life as espoused by faith groups and as interpreted by media; andCommunication Advocacy: Influencing the goals, structure and policies of communication by advocating positions and actions based upon Christian faith and conviction.
